DD and I went to a special workshop yesterday, Minds in Motion. Sponsored by the state association for the gifted and hosted at a local school, the kids got to attend some very cool sessions while the parents listened to some speakers. DD learned all about the life of a pond, finding tons of bugs in water under a digital microscope. And, the highlight of the day, she dissected a squid! She had her very own squid to work on and took out its lenses, the shell (or backbone) and the beak. The instructor helped the kids identify all the rest of the squid parts (tentacles, suction cups, siphon, fin and mantle). Afterwards, the instructor gave DD a compliment, telling me that she was impressed by how much DD already knew about the squid.
I attended sessions about learning styles and the differentiated classroom, both of which were interesting (and useful as I can use them as professional development credits toward maintenance of my national certification.)
It is very fun living with a science and nature girl. She gets SO into her little projects and is not at all bothered by things that others might consider "gross." Over the past month or so, she has made crystals, plastic and butter. She made a magnet out of a nail and a battery, and a bunch of other things, including a terrarium. (Some of the things she does are just experiments and don't have a product). And, she has a special spot out in the back yard where she regularly harvests bugs...
